Police in new pedestrian safety push

I know many of the morning and afternoon walkers in Foster Village think it is right and proper to walk on the roadway, eschewing the sidewalks in favor of the blacktop. [I never personally understood this behavior. Where did they get the idea it was OK to walk in the street?]

This is just a "heads up" to our roadway walkers, pedestrians and motorists that beginning this week, HPD is stepping up enforcement of pedestrian rules.

They will be ticketing drivers who do not stop for pedestrians in sidewalks. The fine is $97 for that violation.

But they are ALSO going to ticket jaywalking pedestrians--those who cross the street at mid-block instead of at intersections, those that cross the street outside of marked crosswalks and those that use the street as their own personal walking path. The fine for jaywalking is ALSO $97.

Gee, will they ticket them while people race by in their hotrods. Someone elderly I guess is an easier perp to catch. I thought there wasn't enough police to catch these caravans of speeders but now there going after people who walk? If I was a policeman I would quit the insanity and run for office. And I see the courts tied up with who was in the right. someone going the speedlimit or someone who figures cause it is the law the the car has to stop stepping out in front of a car without giving time or space to stop.Someone has already had a group of teenagers step out into the sidewalk with them 10 feet away from the crosswalk unable to react in time but as they whizzed by at 35 miles an hour they stopped. If they had slammed on their brakes or the others kept walking on the crosswalk someone would of gotten hurt or worse.
My "elected officals" feel after they get into office they do not need to talk to me so what do I do? I know I can ride the bus (that is what cheryl from the DOT said to the public about the camvans)
Gee, what happened to America?

Why do FV walkers walk in the road?

Three  possible reasons

1. Some of our neighbors park on or across the sidewalks.

2. Some dogs are allowed to run loose. Others throw themselves against the fences in a manner that startles or frightens us.

3. Some of our neighbors allow foliage to intrude on the sidewalk or allow leaves and other debris to accumulate on the sidewalk.

Yours for a better neighborhood,

Len Pepper

Len, if that's the case then the following analogy might apply:

Since I do not like the roundabout, I should drive my car right across the middle of it as if it did not exist. It scares me to drive around the circle, so I should drive across the median instead of around it, as it was designed. I should flout the law and drive over the roundabout instead of choosing a different path that does not contain the roundabout.

Catch my drift?

Aloha,

Blaine
